19th Century Carved Walnut Wood Buffet from Provence, France

About the Item

Buffets from Provence have a distinct style, often featuring carved motifs relating to nature and agriculture. This walnut buffet from the 1800s is no exception, as noted by the highly detailed apron, which is highlighted by a pierced bouquet medallion encompassed by a pair of C-scrolls and foliate margents. Additionally, the two asymmetrical doors, the belt drawer, and the frieze in between all have foliate and/or floral embellishments. Other carved motifs include a flaming heart under a tasseled canopy, leaf cups, a crinkled ribbon, and beading. Behind the beautiful doors with highly shaped panels and thick barbed molding topped by a foliate branch, is a full-length shelf and a cream upholstery with alternating white and brown four-point stars set within beige roundels. A full-length two handled drawer surmounts the doors, offering extra storage for silverware . The large Provencal buffet has a double arbalete top, pierced drop pulls, and enormous iron hinges, and is supported by two block feet in the back and two pad feet beneath roquillard legs in the front. This stately piece, adorned with hundreds of finely sculpted motifs, would be a welcomed addition to any dining room, hallway, or living area.
