19th Century Bleached Oak Louis XV Style 3-Door Enfilade Buffet from France
About the Item
A beautiful rendering in the style of Louis XV, this bleached oak buffet is considered an enfilade since it has more than two doors. Hand-carved in the 1800s, the original finish has been bleached more recently, allowing the strong, darkened graining to gain prominence from the tan and beige colored wood. Also adding to the character are the exposed square pegs used to join the individual pieces of wood.
The 88 ½ inch long top is adorned with a quarter-round molding that marginally overhangs the main body. A full-length shelf can be seen behind the three doors that open on iron hinges. There is also a hidden belt drawer behind the far-right door. All three square doors consist of carved panels with thick, barbed molding. Although the two outer doors feature incongruent carvings (the middle door is symmetric), their overall orientation provides a level of balance. The same is true of the mullions that separate each door, which have been embellished with elongated rectangles and barbed points in opposing corners. A highly sinuous apron, once again with sharp nibs, wraps around to the sides, separated by small cabriolet legs with volute pad feet. Our Louis XV-style enfilade would be a focal point of any hallway, living area, or dining room.
