This stool is in overall good condition, with age appropriate wear, including some loss of finish and minuscule scuffs. Early 20th century, Egyptian Revival, slat oak Thebes stool. The "Thebes stool" was a variation of similar stools found on wall paintings and in tombs of Egyptian royalty Attributed to Liberty & Co, no hallmark. Dimensions: 17.5" w x 17.5" d x 16" H. sloping down to 13". Circa: 1920s. Highly decorative, this 1920s Thebes walnut stool will be a great addition to any living room or bedroom. Early 20th century, with slatted curving seat. Born in England during the 1920s, the Thebes stool is a perfect example of the enthusiasm for everything Egyptian that started in the early 19th century with the conquest of Egypt and that will culminate in the 1920s with the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb by Howard Carter. The stool features a nicely curving slatted seat, The Thebes stool is a distinctive piece of furniture that emerged during the Victorian era's fascination with Egyptology. Crafted around the turn of the 20th century, these stools pay homage to the seating preferences of ancient Egyptian royalty, thus belonging to the Egyptian revival style. Liberty & Co., a prominent design firm, secured a patent for the innovative design of the Thebes stool in 1884. This unique piece remained available for purchase until approximately 1919. Notably, Thebes stools were not the sole instances of Egyptian-inspired furniture. Earlier examples can be found from the 1850s, created by Morris, Faulkner & Co., and later designs in the 1870s by renowned designers such as Christopher Dresser (1834-1904) and E.W. Godwin (1833-1886). Related Liberty & Co. stools illustrated: Liberty’s 1875-1975: An Exhibition to Mark the Firm’s Centenary (London: Victoria & Albert Museum, 1975) p. 35, illustr. C1, Liberty Design, 1874-1914, Barbara Morris (London: Octopus Publishing Group:, 1989) p. 103; Egyptomania: Egypt in Western Art, 1730-1930 (Paris: Éditions de la Réunion des Musées Nationaux and Ottawa: National Gallery of Canada, 1994), pp. 465-66. One of the driving influences of the Aesthetic Movement of the late 19th century was an informed interest in authentic ancient designs inspired by recent archaeological discoveries. Both the three and four-legged Thebes stool were inspired by actual furniture and wall paintings unearthed from royal tombs in the ancient Egyptian city for which they are named. Leonard Wyburd, who was one of the principal designers for Liberty, patented his designs for the Thebes stools in 1884. Liberty & Co. continued to make the popular stools into the early 1900s.
