Ottoman for Falcon Chair in Leather by Sigurd Ressel for Vatne Møbler, c. 1970's

About the Item

About: Introducing a rare early "Falcon Chair" ottoman designed by the highly influential Sigurd Resell in 1971 and produced throughout the end of the 20th Century in Norway by Vatne Møbler. The Falcon Chair and ottoman has become one of the most recognizable and exalted Scandinavian furniture designs of the entire Mid-Century Modern Design era. The frame is constructed of bent and laminated beech wood harvested from sustainable forests and stained rosewood. The newly upholstered leather, in a rich mocha color, adds warmth and character and is nearly indiscernible from the original, this ottoman is as comfortable as it is aesthetically captivating. Norwegian-born architect and designer Sigurd Resell was born in Norway in 1920 and began his storied career in 1950 when he opened his own studio and designed for various customers and manufacturers, including the Danish furniture manufacturer Niels Vodder. From 1948 to 1968, Ressell designed interiors and furniture for the Norwegian furniture brand Rolf Rastad & Adolf Relling. Ressel passed away in 2010. The falcon chair and ottoman is an audacious amalgamation of superior materials, bold stance and renowned comfort. The body is made of canvas and was attached to four arms with sturdy metal hooks with hand-stitched leather borders. The ocher brown leather upholstery could then be placed on this suspension. The falcon chair was originally made with a chrome frame, but in 1974 it was fitted with a lighter frame constructed from bent beech, which looked like rosewood through an intricate staining process. The matching footstool each had the same processing. This Falcon Chair ottoman is a true collector's item, perfect for those who appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship of Ressel himself and authentic Scandinavian Modern furniture. With it's unique beech bentwood construction, new leather cushion, and timeless design, this early Falcon Chair ottoman is perfect for completing your existing Falcon Chair. Make it yours today before it's gone forever. ---Dimensions--- Chair Width: 24 in / 60.96 cm Chair Depth: 24 in / 60.96 cm Chair Height: 16.5 in / 41.91 cm Seat Height: 16.5 in / 41.91 cm Condition Details: Save for a newly upholstered leather cushion this exceptional "Falcon" chair ottoman is in original, vintage condition and has aged to perfection! The bentwood frame, constructed from beech and stained rosewood, shows only minor nicks and light scratches (which can be seen in the detail photos provided) but shows no stains, gouges or other damage whatsoever. The newly upholstered leather on the ottoman, nearly indistinguishable from the original, shows only scars consistent from a once live animal (which can be seen in the detail photos provided). The canvas shows only minor areas of light discoloration but has no tears, fraying or any other signs of damage. The metal fasteners show minor pitting and light rust but are structurally sound. This iconic Falcon chair ottoman is incredibly comfortable, structurally sound and ready for decades more of use. Please view all photos for details on this ottomans current condition. We're limited on the amount of media we can post so additional photos and videos are available upon request.

  • Mid-Century Tooled Leather Sling Ottoman by Angel Pazmino, Ecuador, c. 1960s
    By Angel Pazmino
    Located in Deland, FL
Introducing a rare sling stool by the incomparable Angel Pazmino. Recently and painstakingly restored by our team of craftsmen this iconic ottoman has a new lease on life and we love the results. The solid jacaranda wood frame has been hand-sanded and refinished but we left some of the archetypal and intentional patina which adds character to an already character-rich piece. The upholstery has been re-done in a thick-cut genuine leather hide in homage to Pazmino's original design and intention. The seat has been hand-tooled with love and dedication to the exact dimensions and methods of the original and perfectly offsets the rich woodgrains of the jacaranda wood and even show the ranch brand of the cow as Pazmino often did to emphasize his rustic, back to basics approach. Angel Pazmino is an Ecuadorian furniture maker who has, in recent years, earned world-wide acclaim for his unlikely merging of pre-Columbian American and Mid-Century Modern design elements into his works. Born in 1926, Pazmino began his woodworking career in 1944 as a cabinet maker. Throughout the 1950's and 60's Pazmino travelled throughout the Americas where he exhibited his work and took inspiration from traditional Ameri-Indian artists and techniques. In the late 1960's he added his second authorial characteristic, incorporating graphic elements from the continent's native cultures reviving, as he put it, “the ancient and aristocratic art of leather embossing,” learning from such artisans as master saddler Ignacito Ortiz. His works have been collected by designers, state leaders and most famously Pope John Paul II who, according to Pazmino himself, took two sling chairs back to the Vatican when they were only meant to be borrowed during his 1985 visit to Ecuador. Simultaneously rustic and elegant, functional and aesthetically pleasing this restored sling stool is absolutely arresting from every angle. Ideal for collectors and designers alike who appreciate the unparalleled designs and artwork of Angel Pazmino and are searching for a Pazmino sling ottoman that is ready for a lifetime more of use. With it's mesmerizing variegated woodgrains unique to the jacaranda tree, expert hand-tooled leather work and instantly recognizable stance this artfully crafted and restored ottoman is sure to make a BOLD impression in any space it inhabits. The very epitome of one-of-a-kind, make this sling footstool...
