About the Item

The innovation and mastery of this exceptionally sculptural rocking chair should be taken in the context of the era in which it was created. Featured by R.W. Winfield in the Great Exhibition of London in 1851, it was meant to demonstrate a transformative work of design and use of materials for an everyday object. That it was so minimalistic was astonishing for the times and truly represented a high point for experimental furniture in the industrial arts. Conceived as a ‘campaign’ chair which could be assembled and disassembled quickly, this colonial era chair seems to be the ‘deluxe’ model as it has solid brass arm rests and fused brass to the iron frame throughout unlike other models which were all iron. In form alone it stands as a breakthrough design from this British company which specialized in metallic furniture design and took out several patents relating to the construction of furniture using iron tubing and the like. The Great Exhibition was a display of grandeur on a massive scale, conceived by Prince Albert at a time when Britain was the world’s foremost industrial power and enjoyed great empirical expansion. Set in a spectacular ‘crystal’ pavilion it housed over 15,000 contributors and and over 100,000 objects which connected craft and manufactured goods with ideas about social progress and industry. It was an extraordinary exhibition which had tremendous repercussions on the decorative and industrial arts. (It would be interesting to know when it was imported to Mexico and under what circumstances. Perhaps an English family who was emigrating).
