“Sternum” Rocker Designed by David Ebner

About the Item

The “Sternum” rocker from David Ebner’s “Wishbone” series. Oak and cane. The entire form uses bent lamination technique. “David Ebner played a pivotal role in the development of studio furniture during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Ebner, who studied under Wendell Castle at the School for American Craftsmen at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York, is known for his elegant, pared down works that blur the line between furniture and sculpture. Through his groundbreaking efforts, Ebner has helped redefine studio craft furniture as functional art. After graduating from the School for American Craftsmen, Ebner studied at the London School of Furniture Design. He established his own studio in Long Island, New York, in 1973, where he continues to work. Ebner’s furniture is represented in a number of major institutions, including the National Collection of Fine Art, Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC, the American Craft Museum in New York, the High Museum in Atlanta, The Art Institute of Chicago, the Yale University Art Gallery in Connecticut, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
