About the Item

Available right now, we have an exceptional 10-piece modular sectional sofa designed by Jack Cartwright. This 1970s modular sofa is absolutely stunning! It features two tone upholstery (which was original to the piece-- when we obtained the sofa it was two-toned brown tweed and forest green). We decided to keep the original brown / tan tweed upholstery on the seat-backs as a nod to the originality of the design and have had the seating cushions custom reupholstered in a luxurious ivory bouclé, to add a sense of sophistication and refinement. True to Cartwright's design ethos, this modular sofa offers endless possibilities for configurations, allowing you to adapt it to your space and needs. Whether arranged as a cozy corner sectional, an expansive U-shape, or separate seating islands or zones, this versatile piece seamlessly transforms to meet your desired layout and style. This piece could easily flex into a home environment, or a business / office style seating. The influence of other renowned designers can be discerned in Cartwright's work. This sofa is similar to the Vecta modular sofa designed by John Mascheroni, known for its innovative design and adaptability, is reflected in the modular nature of this sectional. Similarly the, Cini Boeri iconic Arflex designed modular sectional, renowned for their sleek lines and comfort, inspire the sense of effortless elegance inherent in Cartwright's creation. This sofa is also visually similar to the Camaleonda sofa designed by Mario Bellini for B&B Italia. The inspiration can also be sensed in this sectional's adaptability and inviting allure. Like Bellini's masterpiece, this sofa beckons you to sink into its plush cushions, creating a cocoon of comfort and relaxation. Jack Cartwright, a visionary American furniture designer, began his illustrious career in the mid-20th century. Renowned for his impeccable sense of balance, proportion, and functionality, Cartwright's designs captured the essence of Mid-Century Modern style. His ability to blend traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics resulted in furniture pieces that were not only visually striking but also practical and versatile. Cartwright's work exhibited a keen attention to detail and a commitment to using high-quality materials, reflecting his unwavering dedication to craftsmanship. While his exact body of work may not be extensively documented, his designs continue to inspire and captivate furniture enthusiasts and collectors alike. This 10-piece modular sectional sofa by Jack Cartwright stands as a testament to his legacy. With its original tweed seat-backs, custom ivory bouclé upholstery, and a nod to the influences of Mascheroni, Boeri, and Bellini, this sectional is a masterpiece that seamlessly merges comfort, versatility, and enduring style. This sofa would look incredible in any Mid-Century Modern, modern or contemporary environment. Grande Divano Curvo Boomerang Sofa, After Gio Ponti, C. 1950
By Gio Ponti
Located in Culver City, CA
This has to be one of the most beautiful sofas our gallery has ever had. This piece is early Italian1950's. Similar to pieces by Gio Ponti, Ico Parisi and Vladimir Kagan this large curved sofa features walnut legs and has been reupholstered in a fine, white, Belgian boucle. The boomerang-shaped sofa is a true masterpiece that embodies the essence of Italian design. Italian modern design is known for its clean lines, bold shapes, and exquisite attention to detail, making them timeless pieces of art that have stood the test of time. This particular sofa, is a stunning piece that exudes elegance and sophistication. The unique boomerang shape of the sofa is both stylish and practical, as it offers a comfortable seating experience while also being a visually striking addition to any room. The sofa is upholstered in a white Belgian boucle fabric, which adds to its luxurious appeal and complements its sleek design. This boomerang shaped sofa measures 90" long on the longer side, and 75" long on the shorter side. This gorgeous sofa could fit into a corner, but hiding those 9 splayed cone legs, and curved back lines wouldn't quite do this sofa justice. This vintage Italian piece is constructed with the highest level of quality. This sofa in particular has 8 way hand tied springs, the seating cushion has springs, the stuffing all horsehair and the upholstery was a worn mohair. We have remarkable photos documenting sofa before and during restoration. While Gio Ponti is regarded as one of the most significant Italian designers; his contemporaries, such as Achille Castiglioni, Vico Magistretti, and Ettore Sottsass, also contributed to the world of Italian design. Castiglioni, for instance, was known for his playful and functional designs, while Magistretti was renowned for his minimalist aesthetic. Sottsass, on the other hand, was a pioneer of the Memphis Group, which was known for its bold and colorful designs. We currently have this sofa in the gallery alongside a pair of Jean Royere chairs...
