View All“Squash” Brown Sofa by Paolo Deganello for Driade
By Paolo Deganello
Located in Pasadena, CA
Sculptural, Minimalist 1980s sofa by famed Italian designer Paolo Deganello (b. 1940). The sofa is discussed in “Repertorio del Design Italiano 1950-2000,” by G. Gramigna, p. 212 (2003).
In 1966 Deganello cofounded the Archizoom Associati in Florence. The collective was named after the British group of architects known as Archigram and the journal “Zoom.” Part of the radical design movement in Italy, Archizoom created anti-design furniture, such as the corner set “Safari” and the “San Remo” palm-frond lamp (both 1968 for Poltronova). After the group ended in the early 1970s, he continued with his private practice as an architect and designer in Milan, with commissions in Italy and abroad. Deganello’s work was featured in numerous exhibitions, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York’s groundbreaking, “Italy: The New Domestic Landscape,” in 1972.

"Basket Weave" Table Lamp Attr. to Paul Laszlo
By Paul Laszlo
Located in Pasadena, CA
Visionary Paul Laszlo designed this mid-century table lamp for Brown Saltman during the 1950s in the United States. It has a wood body adorned with Laszlo's chest pattern, reminiscent of his famed "Basket Weave" furniture line.
Geometry and volumes take center stage with its rectangular structure for the foot and base and tube-shaped shade.
Paul Laszlo (1900-1993) was a Hungarian-born American interior designer known for his luxurious and influential work during the mid-20th century. He became a prominent figure in Hollywood's Golden Age, designing elegant interiors for celebrities, wealthy clients, and prominent institutions. Laszlo studied architecture at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. In 1927, he moved to the United States and settled in Los Angeles, where he quickly established himself as a sought-after designer. His work embodied the glamour and sophistication of the era, combining modernist principles with opulent materials and impeccable craftsmanship.
Laszlo's clientele included Hollywood stars like Elizabeth Taylor, Cary Grant, and Barbara Stanwyck. Laszlo's designs often featured custom furniture, vibrant colors, rich textures, and a harmonious blend of traditional and modern elements. Throughout his career, Laszlo worked on various projects ranging from private residences to hotels, clubs, and corporate spaces. His notable works include the interiors of the iconic Cocoanut Grove nightclub at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, as well as the renowned Brown Derby restaurant.
Paul Laszlo's influence extended beyond his immediate projects. He authored several books on interior...

Pair of Capistrano Mexican Folk Art Sculptures Attributed to Gemma Taccogna
Located in Pasadena, CA
Capistrano Gemma Taccogna, a Mexican artist of Italian descent, left a distinctive mark in folk art with her mastery of papier-mâché for the small one, and of ceramic for the big one, which she transformed into an illusion of porcelain. Her style is immediately recognizable: faces with clean features, large, stylized eyes outlined in black, and a playful approach to form.
These two vases, attributed to Taccogna, evoke Russian dolls known as Matryoshkas, due to the way the faces are painted, associated with the archetype of the mother of a large family, a symbol of motherhood and fertility.
The larger one, a mix of ceramics and papier-mâché, and the smaller one, entirely made of papier-mâché, share this common aesthetic, reinforced by generous, solid shapes. Their gazes seem to observe without truly concentrating, as if absorbed in a distant thought. This lack of focus gives them a presence that is both peaceful and enigmatic, suspended between wakefulness and dream.
The relief necklaces, applied with a deliberately naïve touch, add a sculptural dimension to the whole. The matte, textured material contrasts with the porcelain-like visual effect. One of the vases is signed "Bunny Price" and dated 1964, while the other remains anonymous. However, their attribution is unquestionable.
Presented together, these vases belong to the movement of the Mexican craft...
