About the Item

The clarity and crispness of carving throughout the mahogany surfaces of this fine settee are simply magnificent. Sharp acanthus with their highly individual and fluid leaves furl freely along every open surface, the knees embellished with an interesting inverted pair of C-scrolls flanking this foliage with a single bellflower hanging from the outer scroll. The frame is active in it's serpentine form, highly reminiscent of the designs from Chippendale's Director, the apron along the front divided into two equal parts centered by a rocaille carving flanked by symmetrical scrolls of acanthus. The surface is most attractive, being at least partially if not mostly original with the deep oxidization of stain that is brings wonderful color variation - stretching from near blacks to ruby red in areas that have had more rubbing and wear over the years. The softly cabriole legs are fluted and terminate in bold scrolling French toes. We recently had this piece recovered in a thick neutral linen. It is an incredibly comfortable and supportive settee, but most importantly is a rare and exceedingly fine example of perfect form and proportion. This is a piece that absolutely sets the pace for all other decor in a formal living area, refined in every way and a work of art. Measurements: 61" W x 28 1/2" D x 38 5/8" H; 15" H to frame with an approximately 8" thick cushion, total height to seat approximately 23" Condition Report: Upholstery is new and without any observed flaws. Tiny pieces of corner molding loss inside legs, rear middle leg missing flanking returns, old reglued crack in right arm support, wear to feet and legs, other minor repairs. Surface blemishes including dings, abrasions and finish loss/discoloration to left stile. Sturdy, strong and incredibly comfortable. We have 45 detailed images of this fine sofa available.
