Federal Style Upholstered Settee, Reeded Mahogany Frame with Gilded Acanthus Leaf & Swans. Federal style is characterized by bold patriotic symbols such as eagles, shield-shaped chair backs. Delicate designs with minimal ornamentation with straight lines. Symmetry and balance were also important; this settee was likely placed in a room that was oval or circular. Influences of the Federal style came from Georgian and Adam styles. Colors often used with Federal style are soft greens, yellows, blues, as well as deep sapphire and crimson.
