About the Item

This enchanting early 20th-century red-painted chinoiserie settee showcases exceptional craftsmanship and artistic detailing. Hand-painted scenic panels depict idyllic landscapes, pagodas, and floral motifs, all rendered in a rich black and gold palette that contrasts beautifully against the vibrant red frames. Intricate fretwork and pierced geometric detailing throughout the backrest, arms, and base emphasize the ornate chinoiserie style, while turned spindles add further refinement to this stunning antique settee. The chairs' bodies are constructed from a sturdy wooden frame, with gilded highlights and decorative geometric motifs along the edges, legs, and arms. Their original seat cushions, upholstered in black embroidered fabric with floral designs, complement the hand-painted details with a striking textural and visual complement. While exhibiting evidence of their previous owners' use, the chairs’ upholstery remains serviceable and retains its antique charm. The painted surfaces show minor nicks and wear consistent with their age and use, enhancing their character and historical authenticity. This settee was originally part of a seven-piece salon suite, which included a pair of armchairs and four stools. The suite belonged to the collection of William L. Bernhard and Catherine Cahill, whose Southampton, New York estate reflected their passion for elegant and historic design. Catherine Cahill, the daughter of prominent attorney John T. Cahill, was a noted animal rights activist. William L. Bernhard, a philanthropist and descendant of the Lehman banking family, is recognized for his involvement in the arts and cultural institutions.
