Amsterdamse School Side Chairs, The Netherlands, 1920s

About the Item

The Amsterdamse School defined Dutch architecture and design from as early as the 1910s. The style has roots in Expressionist architecture, borrowing elements from the Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) and Art Deco design aesthetic. This pair of easy chairs has a visual appearance that is very typical of the movement, with a somber design and quality materials. The aim was to create a “total” sitting experience, so designers paid great attention to both the visual and the material elements of each chair. While the design is primarily in service of functionality, there are still traceable touches of Art Deco as well. As a result, the design of these chairs is a medley of decorative and utilitarian elements in perfect harmony. In the Netherlands the Amsterdam style pursued functionality, purity and simplicity, while Art Deco was much more boisterous; and yet, these chairs manage show off both era’s best qualities in a streamlined modern manner. The design resembles the design of H. Fels for L.O.V. Oosterbeek, a classic of the Amsterdamse School with tapered legs and the distinctive shape of the front ones. The solid wood frames are paired with upholstered seats that accentuate the wood’s beautiful grain and colour. The Amsterdam School style spread beyond architecture to encompass interior design from the 1920s, resulting in timeless pieces such as these side chairs. Interest revived in the 1970s as well as at the beginning of the 21st century. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Some small marks and scratches on the wood. This rare pair is a beautiful representation of the movement’s heritage in the Netherlands. The Dutch Arts & Crafts movement borrowed from the indigenous patterns and techniques of the Dutch East Indies colony, as well as the sober Old Dutch furniture...
