Antique Gothic Revival Monk Chair Oak and Velvet Upholstered, ca. 1900, Europe

About the Item

Unique, very wide antique oak chair made entirely by hand around 1900. Most likely France or Germany, presumably a piece of cleric church furniture. The design is unusually wide (possibly to leave room for extensive robes), kept quite simple, yet there is the typical Gothic Revival carving on the backrest and floral carvings at the end of the arm rests. Originally the seat came with the woven cane only, the upholstered velvet lined removable seat has been fitted around 1970.
