About the Item

This handsome suite of four saber leg side chairs dates to around 1840 and reflects the refined elegance of the American Empire period. Each chair features beautifully figured flame mahogany veneers, skillfully applied to emphasize the sweeping curves of the backs and the dramatic shaping of the legs. The carved crests are particularly attractive, with graceful scrollwork and subtle volutes that complement the pierced midrails. All four chairs are signed by the maker—an uncommon and welcome feature that adds to their collector appeal. The saber legs give these chairs a strong and stylish stance, and they retain a lovely patina developed over generations of use. The black upholstered seats are in nice vintage condition and are very serviceable, though the fabric could easily be changed to suit your decor. Whether placed around a dining table, flanking a sideboard, or used individually as accent chairs, these pieces will lend a warm, period-authentic touch to any room. There is minor veneer loss in a few areas, and one of the chairs shows an older, stable repair at the leg where it joins the seat frame. Overall, the set remains sturdy and attractive, with condition consistent with age and normal use. A beautiful and functional grouping with timeless style and historical interest. 33h x 17w x 17d Seat height 17
