About the Item

A simulated rosewood side chair designed by E.W. Godwin. Raised on bobbin turned front legs and outswept back legs with a cane seat. The rectangular back supported by bobbin turned uprights with slender turned spindles between. Made in simulated rosewood on beech. The cane seat recently replaced. This side chairs design represents a lighter version of bobbin-turned chairs from the seventeenth century. Bobbin turning, revived in the 1820s and popular until late in the nineteenth century, was not common in Godwin’s designs of the 1860s and 1870s. It does appear, however, in his sketchbooks dating from the late 1870s on the back legs of a chair he designed as part of a Jacobean dining suite for William Watt’s Art Furniture. Bobbin-turned legs reappear in a study chair made by William Watt that was exhibited in April 1885 and which also carried a panel back. Easy Chair in Sissoo by Pierre Jeanneret c.1955
By Pierre Jeanneret
Located in London, GB
Wonderful original Easy Chair designed by Pierre Jeanneret. Model no. PJ-SI-29-A. The Easy Chair is masterpiece of modernist design, comfortable and practical, showcasing Jeanneret’s iconic “compass” style, with triangular-section legs, curved backrest and sloping armrests. Made in richly coloured Sissoo, lightly restored and re-caned to retain as much of the chair’s original patina as possible. Pierre Jeanneret (22 March 1896 - 4 December 1967) was a Swiss architect who collaborated with his cousin, Le Corbusier, designing furniture for Le Corbusier's vast modernist complex at Chandigarh. Jeanneret remained for over 15 years as the project’s chief architect and the city remains a masterpiece of the modern vision. The pair pioneered a new aesthetic that placed function and order over embellishment—Jeanneret’s work imbuing the strict geometry of modernism with lighter materials like cane and wood. Jeanneret also collaborated with other modern masters, Charlotte Perriand on experiments in aluminium and wood, and Jean Prouve developing prefabricated housing. Pair of Aesthetic Movement Small Folding Chairs E.W Godwin Manner
Located in Norwich, GB
A pair of Aesthetic Movement small walnut low folding decorative chairs with cane seats, in the manner of E.W. Godwin. Circa 1870s. Free delivery to the UK via a selected parcel company. The walnut frames are in very good condition and have their original patina, showing some age with use, they have been lightly waxed. One of the chairs cane seats professionally re-caned, and it has been aged to resemble the other original cane seat. This same chair has had the under rail replaced in oak with two bolts, as shown in photograph number 12. This was done many years ago - I would say about 80 plus years, looking at the construction. Also added at a similar time under the seat, one small rail either side. The wooden dome...
