18th Century Hepplewhite Period Side Chair in Walnut, English circa 1785
About the Item
This is a very elegant, good quality Side or Dining Chair from the late 18th Century period, circa 1785.
Camel back chairs of this date are popularly called Hepplewhite because very many chair makers followed the designs of George Hepplewhite, as illustrated in his Cabinet Maker and Upholsterers Guide, published in 1788.
This chair has a balanced and flowing, crisply carved back splat, based around the Prince of Wales plumes.
The top and side rails of the back are moulded and the legs are square with an inside chamfer, braced by dovetailed stretchers and the seat is a drop in type which is upholstered in a light green fabric.
The chair is made from hardwood, probably walnut and has a very good naturally patinated colour.

- Mid Victorian Side Chair Finely Hand Carved with Wool Work Seat, Circa 1850Located in Lincoln, LincolnshireThis is a very good quality example of an English occasional side chair in the Rococo style, from the mid Victorian period, circa 1850, made from Beech. The back is a Classic balloon back shape, but with intricate cut-out and carved detail to the frame and particularly to the cross splat. This carved detail is continued on the front legs and front stretcher. The foot of the legs are splayed slightly outwards which adds to the features of this chair. Twin side stretchers give additional strength to this chair but overall this is a delicately made chair. It has a good wool-work covered seat with a rose spray design. Please note: This chair is not a strong dining room chair and is not recommended for regular use as a chair to sit on. The chair is light and would make a very pretty bedroom or hall side chair, to be used principally for display either on its own or with say teddy bears displayed on it, or for draping light...Category
