About the Item

This exquisite pair of 19th-century ceremonial chairs originates from the Baule people of the Ivory Coast (Côte d'Ivoire), celebrated for their masterful craftsmanship and rich artistic traditions. The Baule, one of the largest ethnic groups in Côte d'Ivoire, has a long history of creating exceptional art that reflects their cultural identity. Hand-carved from dense hardwood, these chairs feature intricate detailing that illustrates their cultural significance and ceremonial use. The high backs are adorned with meticulously carved human figures as finials, while geometric diamond motifs and studded embellishments add both structural and decorative appeal. The figures are depicted in an upright posture with their legs slightly bent and hands resting on their abdomen, conveying a sense of dignity and poise. The artistry of the Baule people is both sophisticated and stylistically diverse, showcasing their attention to detail in the hair-plaiting elements and deep-set facial features of the carvings. The chairs exhibit a beautiful, aged patina that reflects their history and usage, enhancing their historical value. Decorated with hand-etched patterns, these seats exemplify the unique artistry of Baule artisans. While these chairs were likely used in ceremonial contexts, they primarily symbolize authority and prestige within Baule culture. Each: H=39.5 in. W=16 in. D=15.5 in. 15 lbs. Each Seat: H=18.5 in. Circa 1750, English Georgian ii Period Mahogany Armchair with Modern Fabric
Located in Chicago, IL
Circa 1750 English Georgian II period mahogany armchair. The George II period was most noted for its intricate chairs. Like the other Georgian periods, this one was named after the monarch during the time. Under George II, mahogany became the predominant wood used for fine furniture. Many of the styles were symmetrical and had architectural curves, inspired by the Gothic. These works were very expensive and only the rich could afford and buy them. This specific armchair has a frame entirely carved from mahogany, which was a strong and durable wood that was also naturally water resistant and offers natural resistance against pests. The back of the chair has a splat design. Splats were an important element of eighteenth-century English chairs, offering support. It originated from the importation of Chinese Ming Dynasty chairs...
