- Bleached Renaissance Style Walnut Sgabello Chair from Italy, Circa 1870Located in Dallas, TXA sgabello is an Italian chair that originated in the Renaissance. Originally designed to be displayed in a hallway (like a French side chair), sgabello were typically highly carved with some sort of familial crest or coat of arms incorporated into the décor. They were purely decorative, as the backrests were elaborately carved with protuberances and bulging motifs; comfort was not a primary concern. Hand-carved from walnut in Italy, circa 1870, our Renaissance style sgabello has recently been bleached, allowing the carvings to gain further prominence. The shaped seat has quarter round molding adorned with a series of niches that have been filled with trefoil leaves. Additional foliage has been shallowly incised to the top of the seat, with sprawling rinceaux surrounding a potted plant. The uniquely shaped seatback has several canted edges, topped with various Renaissance motifs. A pair of fragmented...Category

- Pair of Antique Tapestry Borders from Flanders, circa 1580Located in Dallas, TXA beautiful pair of tapestry fragments, hand-woven in Flanders (now Belgium), circa 1580. At roughly 132 inches (11 feet) long, the fragments were, originally, vertical borders to a very large and brightly colored tapestry. The colors have maintained their vibrancy over the last 400+ years, with deep blue, brown, green, and red accents over a gold and cream background. Although the fragments do not have identical scenes, it is readily apparent that they originated from the same source. At the top of each fragment is a bearded warrior clad in golden armor with a flowing blue cape and green greaves. A shield rests on the ground, supported by the soldier’s left hand, while his right hand lifts a spear into the air. Towards the center of the textile is a pair of musicians, one strumming a lute, while the other plucks a lyre. At the bottom of each tapestry is a single female figure, well-dressed and sitting on a bench with one arm overhead. The remaining areas have been filled with fruit bouquets, architectural elements, and other figurative representations. A more recent navy blue border surrounds the scenes and the backs have been lined with a mauve colored linen. Our hand-woven tapestry borders...Category

- Antique Wool and Silk Tapestry from Brussels, Circa 1650Located in Dallas, TXHand-woven in Brussels, circa 1650, this wool and silk tapestry depicts a church scene with six clergymen at an altar. After roughly 375 years, the colors are still vibrant, highlighted by fabrics of blue that punctuate the predominately gold, cream, and brown fibers of the textile. Two young bishops, possibly receiving their consecration, kneel on the steps of the altar, dressed in a cassock beneath a chimere, with one holding a thurible and the other a biretta. A third bishop stands in front of them, as two elder clergymen look on from the right of the altar. The older of the two holds a crozier and a biretta with arms extended from beneath a luxurious blue and gold ferraiolo. On the opposite side of the altar is the sixth and final bishop, who is wearing his biretta and holding a mitre. The luxurious altar is adorned with tall gilt candlesticks...Category

- Pair of Antique Terracotta Statues, Paris, circa 1880By Gossin Frères ManufactoryLocated in Dallas, TXThis charming pair of French terracotta statues depicts a male and female musician and was made during the latter half of the 1800s. Both statues have been stamped “GOSSIN PARIS” on the back sides. The Gossin factory in Paris was led by two brothers, Etienne (died in 1900) and Louis (1846-1928). The brothers regularly showed their wares at the official art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, the Salon de Paris, where they would often bring home medals for outstanding quality works. They were very well known for their ornamental terra cotta fabrications which were exhibited all-over the country, where they also took home various medals. Both of these statues represent musicians siting upon rocky bases decorated with flowers, and our male musician has been depicted holding a “musette de cour”, which is a relative of the bagpipe. The female musician can be seen with a “vielle à roue” in her lap. A vielle à roue is a string instrument that produces sound when a crank is turned. The crank rotates a wheel that rubs against the strings. The sound can be compared to that of a violin. Place this elegant pair of 19th century terracotta musician statues...Category
