About the Item

This pair of nice old side chairs are of the period called Gustavian. This correlates to that time in Sweden between 1772 and 1809. These chairs were made circa 1790 and are typical of the furniture production found throughout Sweden and Finland at the time. Carved and painted and gilded furniture was interpreted from French neoclassical models and simplified and made more relaxed in ornamentation and in materials. These chairs are in carved old-growth pine a typical wood when the intention was to paint the surface. Pegged construction and careful handcraftsmanship are evident. Carving is done into the surface or applied and then the entire chair is painted and details gilded. Here the paint seems to be mostly original but refreshed with areas of touch up and the gilding has been redone at some point in the early 20th century. The fabric is in as found condition but the seats are simple drop-in seating and easy to upholster in a client's choice of fabric An identical chair is shown in illustrations printed in Rizzoli's “Decorative Arts in Europe 1790-1850” by Leon de Groer on page 203. Painted and gilded in the same manner and even the fabric appears to be very similar that forms part of a private collection in Finland.
