A Pair of Lacquered Chinese Northern Elm Yoke Back ‘Officials Hat’ Chairs

About the Item

A Pair of early 20th Century Chinese Elm Yoke Back Officials Hat Chairs These elegantly crafted chairs feature a graceful, harmonious design rooted in the classic aesthetics of traditional Chinese furniture. Crafted from durable Chinese elm, each chair is characterized by its distinctive yoke-style backrest. The solidly carved top rail flows seamlessly into the shaped yoke, which extends into the upswept flat ends supported on corner posts continuing through to the back legs, flanking a thick, s-shaped rectangular back splat that provides both structural integrity and visual interest. The hard-mat seat rests atop the semi-rounded front legs, which are joined by a continuous, sculpted apron. Lateral and back stretchers provide additional stability, while the integrated footrest adds functionality and strength. A well-presented pair, some age-related wear, the lacquer finish is also mostly intact although there are some areas of wear (for example on the top rail). For those seeking to incorporate more of an Oriental aesthetic into their home decor, these chairs would be an ideal choice. Their classic design, quality materials, and distinctive visual appeal would seamlessly integrate with a range of styles, from minimalist modern to ornate traditional. Placed strategically, they would become a striking focal point that anchors the Oriental influences throughout the space. The solid flat seats also make them an ideal choice as plant stands. Seat Height = 19 inch / 48cm Note: The Lacquer finish makes it difficult to photograph, please look at all the photos, the close up images provide a good representation of the colour tone.
