Pair of Mexican Midcentury Side Chairs

About the Item

Beautiful pair of Mexican midcentury chairs with woven seats, made by Florida Muebles in Toluca, Mexico. Original owner attests to purchasing these in Mexico city in the late 1950s. They are strongly reminiscent of the Bauhaus-inspired designs of Michael Van Beuren, who's company, Domus, would have been producing pieces in Mexico at the same time. Some have previously attributed this piece to Michael Van Beuren, but I have found no evidence of his association with Florida Muebles. Frames are extremely well built and structurally solid - no loose, cracked, or otherwise compromised joints. Woven seats show age-appropriate signs of wear and minor stretching, but are still in good enough condition to support weight.
