About the Item
Rare pair of salon chairs in solid and veneered rosewood, richly carved and decorated, designed by Vilhelm Dahlerup (1836–1907), one of Denmark’s most celebrated 19th-century architects. These chairs were executed by the renowned cabinetmakers Severin & Andreas Jensen, circa 1870–1890.
The design reflects Dahlerup’s mastery of historicist style, blending classical references with exuberant detailing. The elegantly curved, fluted rear stiles (kannelerede agterstaffer) rise to arched top rails, each flanked by finely carved eagle heads. The swept klismos-style front legs are richly decorated with fluting, beading, and acanthus carving, and terminate in finely modeled lion paw feet.
The apron features lightwood intarsia depicting scrolling foliage friezes, beneath which are mounted pierced ornamental carvings of leaf volutes. The seats are constructed with original coil springs and retain their original calico underlayer, while the outer upholstery has been removed, leaving them ready for re-covering.
These chairs are a testament to Dahlerup’s stature as a designer during a period when architecture and furniture were closely intertwined. Vilhelm Dahlerup played a pivotal role in shaping Copenhagen’s cityscape, responsible for landmarks such as the Royal Danish Theatre, Hotel d’Angleterre’s expansion, and key structures in Tivoli Gardens. His furniture, like his architecture, reflects a taste for grandeur and richly layered ornamentation.
One of the offered chairs is documented and illustrated in Møbler med mening (Furniture with Meaning) by Mirjam Gelfer-Jørgensen, Arkitektens Forlag, Vol. I, p. 275
