A pair of vintage neoclassical solid brass Italian side chairs circa 1940 now upholstered in a silk velvet Zoffany fabric. These superb chairs possess the elegant and elongated lines that made Italian design famous around the globe in the 1930's and 1940's. This pair of chairs are based on the gilded wooden examples from the end of the eighteenth century when symmetry and balance reigned supreme as desirable decorative goals. In the twentieth century though a refinement and a reduction of the form to its essential silhouette was favoured with the result that all furniture based on historical antecedents were given this reworking to create a more slender profile. In addition the gleam of the original gilded finish was able to be supplanted by using brass, an actually reflective material able to be cast in exactly the desired shape and form. The back of each chair is framed by a slanted side that flares slightly outward with an arched seat rail that evokes the shape of a medieval shield. But notice that the upholstered back is not solidly attached at the sides but actually floats within the vertical supports. This subtle design treatment gives these chairs a sense of lightness and elegance that the bast of modern furniture achieves. The seat rails are also brass and frame the entire seat on all four sides. Each of the four legs are also of brass with the front legs being straight while the back legs are set at a slant to provide the correct structural stability. Note that each front leg has a raised circular medallion above it on the seat rail as well as a beautifully cast sphere with decorative detail just beneath the seat rail. All four of the legs have a slender tapered profile and terminate in a small button foot while being joined with a straight stretcher that also provides structural support. The chairs have been updated with a custom upholstery that appears on the front back and seat as well as the reverse side so the chairs may be easily moved about a room where needed. The famous fabric house of Zoffany designed this superb silk velvet damask in an enlarged scale that was chosen to complement the modern quality of the chairs.
