About the Item

Primitive Wabi Sabi Carved Tripod Side Chair, Europe, 19th Century. This is a stunning antique tripod chair with the seat and backrest carved from one piece of wood - which is unusual and speaks of the high level of craftsmanship of the maker. The wood shows beautiful colors and grain and features wonderful marks of hand carving all over. The design of this chair is sculptural and elegant, but originally this merely was a practical piece of farmhouse furniture. Although not intended as a statement piece, this tripod chair now is a true work of art and would be a wonderful wabi sabi item to grace your residential or commercial interior. Just look at the unique stance of the chair, with its leaning backrest and uneven carving. When seen from the front, the backrest shows an elegant shape reminiscent of antique hall or Sgabello chairs. Its wide spread legs only add to the unusual charm of this one-off antique. Would be marvelous as a stand alone corner or side chair. Overall, it is a true gem!

Antique 18th Century Chinese Yoke-Back Armchair in Lacquered Pearwood
Located in Meer, VAN
Antique 18th Century Chinese Yoke-Back Armchair in Lacquered Pearwood. A stunning antique Chinese yoke-back armchair from the 18th century. A remarkable design - quintessentially Chinese and of monumental proportions. Should have been a chair for someone important. The design rooted in the Ming-style from several hundred years before this chair was created - showing straight and strict proportions combined with sculptural and flowing shapes all hand carved from solid wood. Remarkable to see a chair this 'boxy' could be so sculptural and dynamic in appearance. Also, this chair is quite comfortable to sit in. Whereas in Japan it was the custom to kneel on the floor or to squat on cushions, chairs were the rule in China from an early date - both for dining and relaxing. Chairs with arms were more honorific than those without and both kinds were for men - women sat on stools. The design of these antique Chinese chairs...
