About the Item

A really beautiful high backed 17th Century Welsh oak 'back stool' - peg jointed and solid with original timbers throughout and with a fantastic rich and warm colour and deep natural patina. The high back with a carved top rail of stylised birds with central stylised tulip. The front stretcher beautifully carved to echo this design. The back splat stamped verso T.L (the chair maker's initials). The splat is a very well shaped heavily chamfered fielded panel. The front legs ring and bulb turned and the whole with original pegged joints. Double sided stretchers and rear stretcher are original also. There are some old knocks and dings consistent with the chairs great age and a few small solid restorations to the top rail carving as shown in our photos. The chair is stable and the colour of the oak, as with all early Welsh oak, is wonderful. The joiner and carver were clearly skilled and experienced craftsmen and made a chair that day in the 1660s which has lasted in superior condition and used by generation after generation for around 350 years. Heavy and robust without weakness or movement at the joints, completely usable A really good and handsome mid 17th century chair. Dimensions are: 19 inches wide, 18 inches deep and 45 inches high. Floor to seat is 18 inches For metric please multiply by 2.5
