About the Item

A period Louis XVI (1772-1792) French boudoir fireside chair, characterized by elegance, lightness and simplicity of form, and reflecting the final era of royal opulence before the upheaval of the French Revolution, this beautiful petite antique low chair was hand-crafted France, likely Parisian work, late 18th century. Featuring hand carved and original painted cream solid wood frame with warm, rustic, heavily distressed patina acquired over the last 200+ years. Having later rose demask upholstered backrest flanked by classical pilaster columns surmounted with simple molded arched rail, over upholstered loose cushion, resting on gracefully curved serpentine shaped seat with rounded front and decorative floral rosette medallion carvings, rising on tapered fluted legs. Reupholstered, following the taste of Marie-Antoinette decoration of upholstery, usually to match the decoration on the walls, of warm, rich coloring and floral motif. As warm and attractive as it useful, with its petite size and standard proportions it can be used a variety of different ways, including placed beside a bedroom fireplace for a cozy, intimate atmosphere, inside your oversized closet as a stool for easy, comfortable changing, as a prie-dieu / prayer chair, chaise voyeuse, hall chair or simply displayed as a decorative accent, it's sure to add a touch of refined luxury, unpretentious sophistication and timeless elegant warmth to any space. Dimensions: (approx) 35" High, 20" Wide, 19.5" Deep Seat height: 15" A superb example, in excellent condition overall. Original paint presents well, enhanced by mellow, warm, rustic patina, with some distressed chippy paint losses and outstanding craquelure. Retaining antique character marks throughout, all wear consistent with age. Upholstery is vintage, not original. Delivered hand waxed, ready for immediate use and generational enjoyment!.

French Louis XVI low caned fireside slipper chair, 18th century. This very rare and exceptional low chair is very old, and has withstood the test of time in a remarkably good state, with a minor loss to the base of the caning in a lower corner of the back (see picture). The caning has a lovely pattern. This low, deep chair was probably a fireside chair. However small metal bolts in the back suggest that it may have at some point been attached, possibly to a vehicle or to some kind of carrying device. It is beautiful and highly decorative. Though it is quite comfortable, we do not recommend it be used for seating to protect the antique caned seat...
