About the Item

Wonderful "Emma" slipper chair with charming curves made in Scandinavia in the early 20th century by an unknown cabinetmaker. Upholstered in a beautiful Sanderson fabric called "Arbour" featuring a pastoral scene in the style of Bouche. Legs of dark stained beechwood. The chair has never been restored and has a wonderful overall patina. The "Emma" chair type got its name in 1821 after a reddish-brown colour in Sweden, called the “Emma colour”. Since 1830 it has been a term for upholstered armchairs in the neo-rococo style with a high, curved back and small or no armrests. This made Emma particularly suitable for the ladies wearing crinoline dresses.
