Scandinavian "Emma" Slipper Chair in Sanderson Textile, Early 20th Century
About the Item
Wonderful "Emma" slipper chair with charming curves made in Scandinavia in the early 20th century by an unknown cabinetmaker. Upholstered in a beautiful Sanderson fabric called "Arbour" featuring a pastoral scene in the style of Bouche. Legs of dark stained beechwood. The chair has never been restored and has a wonderful overall patina.
The "Emma" chair type got its name in 1821 after a reddish-brown colour in Sweden, called the “Emma colour”. Since 1830 it has been a term for upholstered armchairs in the neo-rococo style with a high, curved back and small or no armrests. This made Emma particularly suitable for the ladies wearing crinoline dresses.
