American Chippendale Style Mahogany Camel-Back Sofa

About the Item

American Chippendale style camel-back sofa over marlborough feet. In the Philadelphia manner, Late 20th Century This is a fine reproduction of the original antique American Chippendale Mahogany Camel-Back Sofa of Philadelphia circa 1775-1800, attributed to Thomas Affleck and currently residing in the Diplomatic Reception Rooms of the Department of State. Resting over unusually bold square marlborough legs with molded cuffs and chamfered interior edges, the sofa has incredible presence and stance. Crafted of solid mahogany, each leg is a solid block of dense dark mahogany stretched with solid mahogany stretchers in front of backswept square and similarly thick back legs. The scrolled arms are tight and of excellent form, each executing a perfect "cyma" curvature before joining the frame, these flanking a deep goose feather and down upholstered cushion of great comfort. The back of the sofa is humped in the "camel-back" form, the ripple of the slight peaks on either side of the crest suggesting it's Gothic influences. Mirroring the back of the sofa is the soft serpentine of the apron, giving the piece a rolling and curving line against the thick block pillars lifting the form. We would certainly recommend a fresh and more fitting upholstery is installed, as it will be a stunning piece in a new covering. This is a remarkably attractive and striking piece that was crafted to last the test of time; it will certainly be a cherished addition to any formal Classical interior. Measurements: 84" wide at arms x approximately 35" deep x 39 1/2" high to crest; approximately 24" high to seat Condition Report: Light scuffs and abrasions to legs, quite minor. Upholstery in poor condition and must be changed. Overall a very sturdy and comfortable piece.
