The California Sofa, designed by Parisian designer Jacques Charpentier, is a clever model consisting of two corner modules and three individual modules. This sofa was introduced to the market in 1970 by the Flat Gallery in Paris and Brussels, marking its debut. Its fame was further amplified through features in several leading French design magazines of the time, including an appearance in the April 1971 issue of La Maison Française.
The modular design of this sofa addresses practical considerations. Charpentier deliberately chose this approach to avoid complications associated with the dimensions of a single-piece four-seater sofa. Such furniture would have been excessively bulky and heavy, making it difficult to navigate through stairs or hallways.
This sofa has recently undergone a complete restoration, featuring a new gray velvet upholstery, providing a fresh aesthetic. Each base is meticulously fini- shed in stainless steel.
