About the Item

An exceptional leather Chesterfield sofa with a serpentine shape and three cushions from England c.1920. The curvaceous movement of the front line of this sofa is extremely rare and gives it the most sensuous appearance we have ever seen. The combination of the rolled back along with the rolled arms that is the traditional form of a Chesterfield is here enhanced with a circular front support that frames the serpentine line across the entire front. Although the origin of the term Chesterfield is popularly ascribed to Philip Stanhope, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield (1693-1773) as being the first to commission a piece of furniture with deep buttonholes and quilted leather there is no surviving example that is tied definitively to him. But a true Chesterfield must have the same height back and arms and feature the tufted back, arms and lower seat base in leather to be described properly. The low profile of the sofa is an essential aspect of its appeal and the wide span of the back and sides make it easy to sit upon when attending a large gathering. As the sofa retains its original leather the surface has mellowed to a gorgeous caramel colour with an extremely soft texture. Each of the three cushions on the seat are also covered in matching leather and their down filling makes for a welcoming embrace when seated. Interestingly the sofa also retains the original wheeled casters that slightly elevate the piece and give it a slightly floating quality. When looking at the sofa it is the combination of the leather material with the deep button tufting that creates the attractive play of light and shadow across the surface. In addition the nail head trim offers a bit of sparkle while the smooth texture of the leather cushions adds another level of visual interest. This is a sofa that issues an instant invitation to ease and relaxation and will anchor a room with authority and style.
