"The U.S. would profit by the example of the Danes, whose great work in furniture design is the result of combining proficient craftsmanship, fine design and technical skill. The Danes do more than sell arts and crafts in their distinguished work, they sell Denmark." - Lawrence Peabody, 1957 about the designer Lawrence Peabody, an architect, interior designer, and furniture designer, was born in 1924 in Haverhill, MA. Mr. Peabody often preferred the name "Larry" instead of Lawrence although he tended to use the name Lawrence professionally. He was known to be a flaming extrovert and was rarely reserved in his opinions. He had a clear love of design even choosing the Navy because he liked the uniforms. After serving in WWII he was able to take advantage of the GI Bill. This allowed him to study at the Rhode Island School of Design. At RSID he was heavily influenced by Ernst Lichtblau who was part of the Austrian Werbund. At the time there was a heavy Bauhaus influence due to many Europeans who had fled to the US for WWII. After RISD the story goes that he wandered around Europe and ended up taking courses at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. While there he met his wife Bette who he wed in 1952. She was originally from Norway, a bit older and extremely interesting in her own right. She was part of the Danish resistance during the war, helping out as a nurse. She had also studied psychology and was a teacher. During a trip to Haiti, Lawrence became friends with Dewitt Peters, the founder of Haiti's Le Centre d'Art. Together they promoted interest in primitive Haitian art by corresponding with museums overseas. Lawrence bought a beautiful home in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti in which he split his time later in life. designer: Lawrence Peabody Manufacturer: Craft Associates® Furniture Period/Model: Mid Century Modern Indoor/Outdoor: Indoor Specs: Walnut, Upholstered history Lawrence “Larry” Peabody (1924-2002) was an architect, interior designer, and furniture designer. As an American born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, his distinctive design were often influenced by his Scandinavian roots. Lawrence studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, Denmark and at the Rhode Island School of Design. His early career with Selig Mfg. Co. was prolific and helped put both himself and Selig on the map for modern furniture. He then started Lawrence Peabody & Associates in 1955, a design firm in Boston which included a vast client list (Sears, Roebuck & Co., Kohler, Regal Rugs, Boyd Lighting, Chapman Lamps, and Richardson Brothers). In 1961, Mr. Peabody won a Citation for Merit for his Peabody Collection for Richardson/ Nemschoff. Winner of the 1962 International A.I.D. design award for his wood frame rattan cradle chair, he also received the Walnut Classic Award for outstanding established collection of furniture executed in walnut. Craft Associates® Furniture is honored to have acquired the rights to produce licensed Lawrence Peabody designed furniture. dimensions H: 34.25" (89.96 cm) W: 77.25" (196.21 cm) D: 30.25" (76.83 cm) Seat Height: 19" (48.26 cm) Seat Width: 17.5" (44.45 cm) Seat Depth: 69.75" (177.16 cm) Arm Height: 23.25" (59.05 cm) pricing Pricing to trade: Yes International Shipping: Yes SKU: CraftAssociates Sofa, Peabody Bracket Back Sofa, Upholstered
