Vintage Parish - Hadley Sofa by Baker Furniture, circa 1995-96. This elegant sofa design was born from an all too brief collection for Baker from renowned designers, Sister Parish and Albert Hadley. Truly this sofa has both of their inimitable styles all over it so to speak. Sculptural yet restrained, it's lines evoking a nod to the past while keeping a clear eye on the contemporary, and above all - comfortable. Ready to be reupholstered to suit some fabulous room. From Sun Sentinel Article: March 17, 1995|By CHARLYNE VARKONYI Home and Garden Editor When Sister Parish died in September at age 84, one New York design editor was quoted as saying: "I know it's the oldest cliche in the book, but this really is the end of an era." The woman known as the doyenne of American decorating is gone, but the firm that bears her name continues to impact American interior design. Mrs. Henry Parish II (as she preferred to be called) and her partner, Albert Hadley, turned Parish-Hadley Associates of New York into one of the most influential interior design firms in the country... Hadley reminisced recently about the 32 years he and "Sis" worked together during a visit to the Baker Knapp & Tubbs showroom at the Design Center of the Americas in Dania. "A number of times we had to fight it out," he said. "But these skirmishes were good because we learned from each other." They were an unlikely pair. She - the well-heeled, self-taught decorator - was known for her love of chintz, quilts, rag rugs and rooms cluttered with collections. He - the farm boy from Tennessee trained at the Parsons School of Design - prefers rooms that are clean and architectural in line, with minimal accessories and soft plain colors. He explained it this way: "Sis was very romantic and traditional. I am a traditionalist because of my education." Hadley's traditionalism means that he would prefer an architectural pediment in a modern piece of furniture, while Parish's view of traditional was a classic Chippendale chair. The new line of furniture for Baker takes some of the custom designs Parish-Hadley developed during the years and reproduced them for a larger market..... "Baker wanted a collection that was young and light, something that could blend with the furnishings the customer already has and things that could be bought one at a time," Hadley said. Indeed, those with limited budgets may have to buy these elegant pieces one at a time. ....
