About the Item

Early Camel Back Sofa having rolled arms with brass tack decoration over a rectangular shaped seat raised on stop-reeded mahogany block legs with triple H stretcher supports. Dimensions:76" long, 30" deep and 35 1/2" high. Condition: Please see detail photos. For restoration. Various signs of age include very worn fabric with losses and tears requiring reupholstery, wear and losses to the legs and slightly loose joinery however despite the wear the Sofa retains an elegance from another time. Provenance: Originally from the estate of W. Warren Barbour (1888-1943) born in Monmouth County, NJ. His father, Colonel William W. Barbour was founder of the US branch of The Barbour Linen Thread Co., with offices in NYC and mills in Paterson, NJ. WW Barbour attained renown for a variety of accomplishments. In 1910, he became the Amateur Heavy Weight Champion of the US and Canada. Through his brief career as a boxer, he became friends with Teddy Rosevelt because of his love of the sport and was an official time-keeper for the famous Dempsey-Willard fight in 1919. In 1917 he became President job the Linen Thread Co., served on the Borough Council of Rumson, NJ, mayor of Rumson in 1923. Appointed to US senate in 1931 and held that office until his death in 1943. His contributions as a US Senator as well documented in the Congressional Library and the Biographical Directory of the US Congress. When not in Washington DC, Barbour lived in the beautiful Beaux Arts home, "Hilden" in Locust, NJ. The stately home sat on a promontory overlooking the Navesink and Shrewsbury Rivers.
