Fine Regency Mahogany Sofa After John Taylor

About

A very fine English Regency carved mahogany sofa after a design by John Taylor incorporating Greek and Roman elements. English, circa 1825. Having acanthus leaf wrapped carved scroll ends, the top rail features a shaped foliate double scroll with central carved anthemion, above a padded back and cushioned seat. The Grecian urn-shaped padded arm supports resting on square plinths with recessed foliate carvings, raised on four tapering feet, the Roman swag carvings to the tops above a foliate carved foot terminating on the original brass castors. This design corresponds to a design by John Taylor, a Covent Garden upholsterer who’s design a “Dress Sofa” was published in R. Ackermann's, 'Repository of Arts' 1821, (P. Agius, Ackermann's Regency Furniture and Interiors, Marlborough, 1984, p. 132, pl. 116). This very much admired Regency design has been executed in the finest detail showing all the hallmarks of one of the well-established leading cabinetmakers of the Regency period. A similar design of sofa saw a closely matched pair sell in Sotheby’s London, July 2013, Lot 218 for £40,000. Sold in the original condition bought from a private estate, ready to be upholstered and polished if required. Prices for upholstery can be given on request.
