Johannes Spalt 'Constanze' Convertible Daybed Sofa by Wittmann, Austria, 1970

About the Item

A freestanding sofa model 'Constanze' / 'Constance' with black steel and a fabric in a warm cognac / golden / ocher / mustard yellow / orange tone designed by Prof. Johannes Spalt for Wittmann, Austria, manufactured in midcentury, circa 1970. By one hand movement the 'Constanze' changes from a sofa to a daybed. Johannes Spalt designed this convertible daybed in 1961 but the offered piece probably was manufactured later in 1960s or early 1970s. The original fabric is in very good condition. The 'Constanze' is a beautiful design obect in a very high quality technique which can be positioned freely in a room because of the upholstered backside. Dimensions: Use as sofa: L 78" (195 cm) x D 29.5" (75 cm) x H 28.5" (73 cm) / seat height 16" (40 cm) Use as daybed: L 78" (195 cm) x D 43" (110 cm) x H 16" (40 cm) There is also a matching pair of chairs in a separate listing available (please see last image). About Prof. Johannes Spalt: Johannes Spalt attended the 'Gewerbeschule' Salzburg and studied architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Clemens Holzmeister from 1949. He founded 'Arbeitsgruppe 4' (engl. 'working group 4') together with Wilhelm Holzbauer, Friedrich Kurrent, and with Otto Leitner which left in 1953. The groupd was named afterwards the '3/4-ler'. In 1969 he ran his own studio in Vienna, in partial cooperation with Friedrich Kurrent. From 1973 to 1990 Johannes Spalt was Professor of Interior Design and Industrial Design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and from 1975 to 1979 also its Rector. In addition to designs and realized buildings, Spalt created numerous furniture designs, for example for Wittmann Möbelwerkstätten. Johannes Spalt organized with Max Kurrent the first Adolf Loos exhibition: 1962 in Paris and 1964 in Vienna in the new museum of the 20th century. In 1965 the first Josef Frank exhibition took place in Vienna.

Johannes Spalt 'Constanze' Sofa Daybed in Black Leather and Steel
Located in Waalwijk, NL
Johannes Spalt for Wittmann, sofa or daybed, leather, chrome-plated steel, Austria, 1960s. This mid-century modern sofa is designed by the acclaimed Austrian furniture designer Johannes Spalt. The design is characterized by a solid construction based on sharp lines and angular shapes noticeable in the body of the seat and the chromed steel base, underlining the clear structured design. The metal legs elevate the seat in a graceful way, which establish an open and more transparent look to the whole unit. The tufted seat with buttons is upholstered in black leather. As outcome, this creates more visual interest and adds a graphical touch to the quite simplistic design. By only one hand movement the 'Constance' transforms from a comfortable sofa to daybed. A very elegant and also nifty technique. Johannes Spalt (1920-2010) was a postwar Austrian architect. In 1952 he founded the collective "Arbeitsgruppe 4" together with Wilhelm Holzbauer, Friedrich Kurrent and Otto Leitner. Their ideas and designs are still a great example of Austrian architecture...
