About the Item
Carl-Johan Boman for Oy Boman AB rare loveseat/compact sofa with elegantly curved back and tapering stained legs, Finland, 1940s. This exquisite sofa has a classic Scandinavian Modern form including beautiful curved back extending gently into curved arms and back legs which kick out playfully.
The sofa was up to our knowledge upholstered last in the 1990s (refer to pictures). Thus the condition is not up to standards anymore, and it does require new upholstery. The frame's condition however is good considering the age, which is a testament to the quality and craftsmanship of Boman Oy. We choose to leave it in this condition so you can you choose fabric that suits the best in your interior.
Carl-Johan Boman (Finnish, 1883-1969) studied interior design at the Royal College of Art and Design in Berlin. He then worked for the Boman Furniture Factory, founded by his father, carpenter and manufacturer Nikolai Boman, beginning in 1906 first as artistic director and subsequently in 1919 as managing director. Founded in 1871 in Turku, N. Boman's Steam Carpentry Factory was the leading manufacturer of quality furniture in Finland at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The company was a popular decorator of upper-class and bourgeois homes in Finland and also in Russia, especially in the 1910s.
After the death of his father, Carl-Johan sought to renew the factory’s product range from repetitive-style bourgeois furniture to functionalism. In 1927, the company known as Oy N. Boman AB was awarded the title of Royal Swedish Court Procurer. Boman’s furniture received awards in international exhibitions as early as the 19th century, and back in the 1950s they participated in the Milan Triennial in 1951 and 1954 and in the Scandinavian arts industry’s North American exhibition tour Design in Scandinavia 1954–1957.

Ilmari Lappalainen "Laila" Sofa for Asko, Finland 1950s
By Ilmari Lappalainen
Located in Utrecht, NL
The “Laila” models from the series by the Finnish designer Ilmari Lappalainen originates from 1948, with the earliest original drawings kept in the Lahti City Museum in their Lappalainen Collection. Designed in the halcyon phase of what we know today as Mid-Century Modern, this charming sofa is a unique evidence of how traditional Finnish craftsmanship was brought into modernism.
This sofa is from the Finnish designer’s most famous series called “Laila”. The design became sought after by collectors even in its production time, which is quite rare in the case of Nordic Mid-Century Modern furniture. Lappalainen was a renowned designer, famous for his designs’ comfort. Some of his designs even received medical approval because they had such a good seating that it prevented back problems. As an essentially Finnish modern piece, this sofa is built around the core characteristics of the era: gently rounded edges, tapered wooden legs, and a generous, fully upholstered body. The style was modelled on the Swedish and Danish furniture of the time, including the round edges and generous seat cushion and back with three large tufted buttons. In the absence of ornamentation, the three large tufted buttons on the back stand out, creating depth as they sink into the textured green fabric. The design has the “Classic Nordic look”, which explains the contemporary popularity of this sofa both among the public and museums. The modern aesthetic is further elevated by the textured, premium upholstery that complements the shape and the wooden, tapered legs as well.
Wood is omnipresent in the Nordics, and Finnish woodworking is world-famous for its traditions. This sofa was created for Asko, the Finnish furniture manufacturing company founded in 1918 by Aukusti Asko Avonius, known for the production of high-quality furniture. By 1930 the company had developed into the largest furniture chain in Finland and the largest supplier of furniture in the Scandinavian countries. Favourites of this time included Ilmari Lappalainen’s Laila...
