About the Item

A rare ‘Model 450’ banana sofa designed by Illum Wikkelsø for Aarhus Polstermøbelfabrik in the 1960s. The striking, Danish Modern silhouette features a wide curved back, softened angular armrests, and decorative piping along the seams. This sofa sits low to the ground on six tapered teak legs. Freshly reupholstered in Felt Melange fabric in the color Bluff, a beautiful creamy beige hue. Denmark, 1960s. Danish furniture designer Kristian Illum Wikkelsø (1919–1999) believed that furniture should encompass quality craftsmanship, indulge the body, and please the eye. With his clean line aesthetic and appreciation for natural materials, he was one of key influencers of Danish design internationally during the Mid 20th Century.  Wikkelsø established his own design firm, based in Aarhus, Denmark, in 1954. He won four awards for his contributions to the Copenhagen Cabinetmaker’s Guild’s annual furniture exhibitions, and his work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world. Condition: Excellent vintage condition. Newly reupholstered in Felt Melange fabric in the color "Bluff". The coil springs have been repaired over medium density foam.
