About the Item
An exceptional American Studio Craft sofa executed in black walnut and finished with a raw silk seat cushion, designed and built by Larry and Nancy Buechley, circa 1987. This highly sculptural form comprises a bent-laminated base that supports the floating, hand-carved armrests and the stack-laminated back which was cut from a single wide board and is attached to the rear legs with large sliding dovetails. The raw silk upholstery is original and its highly textured surface provides a stunning contrast against the sculptural surface of the walnut. This sofa is a one-of-a-kind that the Buechleys created solely as a spec piece, as part of a progression of design concepts, and comes from the estate of the original owners who collected studio furniture, including works by Nakashima. The construction is robust and the design is deceptively comfortable. It was extraordinarily well-cared for and as such is in all original condition. Original gallery documentation is included as well as three knit pillows.
The husband and wife duo, educated in the fine arts and autodidacts where the technical aspects of their work is concerned, hail from Pennsylvania but relocated to a remote village in New Mexico in 1975 where they established their woodworking studio and where they still design and teach woodworking.
