A Pair of Early 19th Century Carved Oak Sofas, Designed by William Atkinson With subtly carved gothic detailing to the arm, and low, broad and deep dimensions. From the workshops of William Atkinson, an English architect most highly regarded for his designs incorporating elements of gothic revival, working mainly in the Scottish lowlands in the early 19th Century. Height: 91 cm, 35 7/8″ Width: 227 cm, 89 3/8″ Depth: 88 cm, 34 5/8″ Provenance: Scone Palace, Perthshire, Scotland Further literature and comparable designs; William Atkinson’s original hand drawn design for a “Sofa for Gallery Scone, July 1821′ with identical carved arm is held in the family archive of Scone Palace. [Christies, London, 24 May 2007, “Scone Palace and Blairquhan, The Selected Contents of Two Great Scottish Houses”, Lots 415 & 416; matching four armchairs.]
