Restored 1940s Chesterfield Hand Dyed Aged Leather Gentleman's Club Sofa

About the Item

We are delighted to offer for auction this lovely circa 1940s fully aniline leather hand dyed vintage leather Chesterfield three-seat club sofa This sofa has been fully restored to include having the old colour stripped back, it’s then been redyed by hand, protected and polished to this stunning finish you see here You’ll see lots of these models but not many of this calibre and quality, the difference between a modern day budget buttoned sofa and genuine original vintage Mid-Century Chesterfield are sometimes over looked, I’ll point out a few of the key points for you here The best Chesterfields are all upholstered with plain, untreated fully aniline leather, you can tell genuine untreated leather by pulling back the folds (as pictured above and below) inside you will see the natural beige colour of the hide, it should be completely untreated and untouched Upholstering with plain russet leather is an expensive proposition, only the finest retailers make seating this way because it adds great cost to the finishing, basically once a sofa is upholstered with predyed leather your job is done and home you go, with plain leather you have to dye it a base colour, add and antiquing solution, dye another middle colour, rub it off, add more antiquing solution, dye a top colour, rub it off then seal it, can you imagine how long it would take to do all that by hand The end result is a colour that is totally bespoke and custom to your piece, this sofa is the only one of its kind that’s this exact colour, this wonderful deep redish mahogany brown The other great property of fully aniline leather is the hide shows the natural imperfections, semi aniline which is treated comes out perfectly smooth and is used on contemporary pieces that need to look edgy and sleek, full aniline leather is vintage looking from day one and only ages with grace and charm, the longer you own a good Chesterfield the better it looks and more valuable it becomes The base cover is naturally hessian, the frame internals are eight way hand tied coil springs, very few modern retailers continue to make sofas and chairs with coils, again they are all placed and secured by hand, hessian padded and supported and reinforced with a metal support frame The antiqued stud work is all individually hand tacked in place, no cheap chain link studding to be found here.
