Sofa mod. Twice leather designed by Pierluigi Cerri for Poltrona Frau 1980s

About the Item

Three-seater sofa model Twice in brown leather, produced by “Poltrona Frau” in 1980 and designed by Pierluigi Cerri. The seat consists of two leather cushions. The external structure is covered in brown leather with visible stitching and chrome-plated metal details. The front features small feet, while the back has two wheels. The logo is present inside the backrest and under the cushions. Dimensions: H 75 x W 195 x D 84, seat height 40 CM. POLTRONA FRAU was founded in 1912 by Lorenzo Frau, known as Renzo (1881-1926). Frau was born and raised in Cagliari, married, and moved to Turin. It was here that he began working as a sales agent. Thanks to this job, he had the opportunity to travel to Great Britain and discover Chesterfield-style armchairs. He then started importing them to Italy. Shortly after, in 1912, he decided to open his own production workshop, allowing him to expand his offerings and transition from producing traditional style armchairs to creating original designs, personally drawn by him. With foresight, Frau also registered the trademark with the Chamber of Commerce of Turin, becoming the manufacturer of a series of armchairs destined to make history in Italian furniture and design. When World War I broke out, he was called to arms: during this period, his wife Savina Pisati replaced him in his work. Upon his death, his wife definitively took over the company's leadership, along with their son Ugo. Thanks to a rich archive of drawings left by her husband, the widow continued the production of Poltrona Frau, transforming it into the world-renowned brand that, over the century, furnished private and royal homes, restaurants, hotels, theaters, museums, political offices, ocean liners, airplanes, and automobiles. PIERLUIGI CERRI (Orta San Giulio, March 22, 1939 – November 29, 2022) was an Italian architect and designer. Pierluigi Cerri graduated from the Polytechnic University of Milan, where he taught with Umberto Eco. In 1974, he became a founding partner of Gregotti Associati, with which he won numerous architecture competitions. A member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale, in 1976, he directed the visual identity of the Venice Biennale; he was responsible for the visual identity of the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle in Bonn and Palazzo Grassi in Venice. He was an editor for the magazines Casabella and Rassegna; collaborated with the magazines Lotus International, Abitare, Domus, and l'Espresso; and directed the graphic design series Pagina, Electa. He also curated the graphics for La Nave di Teseo.
