Swedish Three-Seater Conversation Sofa, Sweden, 1940s

About the Item

This beautiful Swedish three-seater sofa recalls the distinctive curves of the Art Deco period, while material and cabinetmaking-wise being a true Swedish Modern design. Thanks to its curved shape, this sofa is exceptionally cosy and elegant, a statement piece that is also referred to as a conversation sofa. The term Swedish Modern was quickly established as a reinterpretation of modernity during the 1940s, and in the new Swedish Modern style, early and square functionalism was replaced by a freer and more artistic ideal. Swedish Modern furniture is popular because it speaks to both our tidy tendencies and our desire to live in inviting and comfortable settings. Accordingly, this sofa has a very precise, defined outline, accentuated by the visually sectioned back. There is a great balance in the design, which is achieved through the clever use of the straight and rounded edges of the upholstered body and the short wooden legs. The curving back and armrests are welcoming, and unmistakeable of the era’s design in Sweden. The rich texture of the cosy upholstery gives the sofa a modern edge while also enhancing the generous size of the seat and back. The body is supported by two front, and three back legs in a dark brown colour. This gorgeous sofa further illustrates how modernist design can be warm and cosy despite its reputation of often cold simplicity. The modern design movement made the Swedish form widely known and this second generation of 'functionalists' affirmed craftsmanship, tradition, and history. The new style, in which this three-seater conversation sofa was also created, signalled both status, unassuming and sensitive awareness right up to the 1960s. Condition: In good vintage condition. • Alfred Christensen Three-Seater Sofa for Slagelse Møbelfabrik, Denmark 1940s
    By Alfred Christensen
    Located in Utrecht, NL
Danish Modern focused more on the aesthetics of modern design whilst employing the exquisite technique and material familiarity of highly skilled craftsmen known as cabinetmakers. Alfred Christensen’s present sofa in this style is a rare and exquisite example of this. This sofa has the characteristic ‘open armrest’ design that showcases the high level craftsmanship and the beautiful walnut structure as well. Clean and pure lines define this model that are coupled with expert craftsmanship and delicate research into proportions, materials and the requirements of the human body, adapting design to modern-day needs. Adopting the trend of abandoning ornamentation to benefit the form, Christensen maintained the beauty and warmth inherent to traditional Danish cabinetmaking. In consequence, this three-seater sofa has an elegant but still warm look thanks to its rounded edges and open execution. The only form of ornamentation - apart from the bent armrests - is the button tufting on the back. The light colour of the textural upholstery in combination with the dark walnut legs create an aesthetic that is perfect to bring a modern touch to any space. While Danish designers, including Alfred Christensen, had many principles, above all, all designers...
