About the Item

Designed in 2005 by Hella Jongerius, the Polder Sofa is named after the Dutch way of organizing the landscape: reclaiming artificial land from the sea by building long horizontal dykes and intersecting drainage canals. With its flat surfaces, low-slung body and horizontal emphasis, the Polder Sofa evokes the characteristic features of the Dutch landscape. The seat cushions of the Polder Sofa form a asymmetrical seating surface, flanked on both sides by the upholstered body. A low armrest is integrated on one end of the Polder Sofa, while the other is bordered by an adjoining platform that also serves as a surface for placing books or trays. The upholstered materials are exclusively developed for Vitra by Hella Jongerius and can be easily removed for cleaning thanks to a simple fastening device: a series of coloured plastic, aluminium and leather buttons. The listed Sofa is the original first generation production, featuring cushions sunken into the body and buttons on the back fastened by uncut threads. The sofa is in completely original condition — upholstery cleaned and fresh — with a pleasant discoloration by use over the years. No holes or tears. This is de largest edition ever made, and no longer in production, measuring 330 cm. A true eyecatcher.

Tobia Scarpa Three Seater Sofa by Cassina
By Tobia Scarpa, Cassina
Located in Barcelona, Barcelona
Three Seater Sofa model Soriana designed by Tobia Scarpa in 1969. Manufactured by Cassina in Italy. A design armchair with soft, generous contours, designed to bring home casual, sophisticated comfort that opens the door to new, freer lifestyles. The idea for this armchair that changed the face of upholstered furniture belongs to Afra and Tobia Scarpa, who designed it in 1969, starting with the new possibilities offered by the forming of polyurethane foam to create an unconventional look of leisure. With a vise-like grip, the metal structure holds the armchair, with its biodegradable internal padding that, for the first time ever, needs no internal support, intensifying the comfort level of this upholstered chair in the most freeing sense of the word. He has since been awarded many other design prizes and many of his designs can also be found on show in some of the world’s key museums, including his ‘Libertà’ chair...
