William and Mary furniture derives its naming from Dutch William III of Orange, and his wife Mary II; who became joint monarchs of England in 1689. Very comfortable and skillfully upholstered settees and easy chairs were made, and the wood of choice for intricately carved elements became walnut, in place of heavier oak. This settee has an ornate base, incorporating three upwardly flaring front legs, attached by intervening scrolled and arched stretchers. The side and rear stretchers have very complex turnings.
