About the Item
19th Century, Four Tuscany Curule Wood Stools
These four elegant stools were crafted from fine wood in Tuscany, Italy, during the early decades of the 19th century. The distinctive "X"-shaped seat, known as the curule seat, originates from a folding chair used in ancient Rome. The curved seat, upholstered with cushions, offers great comfort. The armrests, which extend outward, end with a scroll-shaped decoration adorned with phytomorphic elements. The four curved, convex legs, also ending in scrolls, provide stability. The graceful and decorative lines make these stools, which can also function as armchairs, very versatile and suitable for placement in various spaces such as living rooms, studies, hallways, as well as bedrooms and bathrooms. They can be displayed in pairs, all four, or individually, either alongside antique or modern furniture.
The curule chair, a symbol of judicial power, was initially reserved for the kings of Rome and later for senior magistrates with jurisdiction, known as "curules," and for emperors. The symbol of power represented by the curule chair has its roots in ancient Etruria, where the folding chair in the shape of a saddle was considered a prerogative of those who could exercise judicial and executive power over the people. It was introduced to Rome by the fifth king, Tarquin the Elder, of Etruscan origin.
The curule chair has had a significant influence on furniture design across various cultures, showcasing its timeless appeal and versatility. From ancient Rome to the present day, the curule chair continues to be highly sought after for its combination of classical aesthetics and functionality.

A wonderful example of functional art, the impressive antique, circa 1880, having beautifully aged patina over the whole, retaining original antique character throughout, worn smooth, naturally distressed patina that does not detract from the overall display, but only adds to the elegant rustic warmth, historical depth and European old world charm.
