19th century Italian Renaissance Revival Savonarola Stool

About the Item

Anonymous 19th century; Italy Walnut, velvet, silk embroidery Approximate size: 24.5 (h) x 27.5 (w) x 16.5 (d) in. This elegantly designed wooden chair features a frame crafted from walnut, inspired by earlier Renaissance period prototypes. During the 19th century, this seating style was dubbed the ‘Savonarola,’ named after the Dominican Friar, Girolamo Savonarola, whose writings and preaching experienced a renewal in interest as European and American populations approached the turn-of-the-century. This stool features handsomely turned arms surmounted by carved grotesques. A tie-on handmade antique silk velvet embroidered seat cushion with tassels accompanies the stool. The chair is supported by a curule base with carved paw feet. The vibrant yellow cushion adds a pop of color and eloquent style, making it an ideal addition to any living space or dining area. Its timeless design seamlessly blends with various decor styles, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of your home. Condition commensurate with age. Stable but wobbly and not recommended for utilitarian use, but rather to accent a room or space. Minor nicks, scratches, dings and chips. Some old worming present along surfaces.
