19th Century Mahogany Stool in the Italian Renaissance Style

About the Item

Mahogany X-framed stool with stylized heads, probably lions. The original Renaissance stools were produced in Italy during the 16th century and constructed from walnut . This style has been copied throughout Europe for over three centuries. As this example is in mahogany it could be either from France or England. There is a similar example in the Marmottan Museum, Paris by the Jacob Brothers, c. 1800. The quality of the wood carving is what makes this piece so exciting. This particular stool has been constructed with strengthening stretchers and so has survived better than other examples. Dating from the first half of the 19th century, the mahogany is rich and dark and therefore probably Cuban in origin. The seat of the stool has been re-upholstered in a sympathetic style.
