Assento Stool by Macheia

About the Item

Assento Stool by Macheia Handmade In Portugal. Dimensions: D 55 x W 75 x H 40 cm. Materials: Natural dried bulrush and galvanized iron. Inspired by Tanho, the most iconic piece of the Bunho technique, Assento is a hybrid between a sitting stool and a side table. The bulrush spiral extends into a metal arc that embraces the wheel into the metal structure. The low seat’s organic shape represents a release from the spiraling motion of the wheel. The Collection zooms in the Bunho technique - a unique portuguese basketry technique that shapes the natural fiber Bulrush (Schoenoplectrus Palla), into a intricate mesh of knots and stitches. Nowadays, the Bunho technique is kept by the hands and know-how of only two artisans in Europe, One of them is Manuel Ferreira. With an intention of preserving and highlighting such important heritage, the Collection combines the most iconic shape the technique takes - the wheel - with metal structures to create a new dynamic between both materials. Bulrush relies on the collaboration of two master craftsmen, a Bunheiro and a Blacksmith, to create/propose a revisited approach on ancient techniques. MACHEIA, is a term that refers to a measurement of quantity equivalent to one’s hand. Lisbon-based design studio whose work ranges from storytelling-objects, performative installations and private commissions with an intentional focus on natural fibers, ancient techniques and their continuity.

Cadeira Chair by Macheia

Cadeira Chair by Macheia Handmade In Portugal. Dimensions: D 45 x W 45 x H 88 cm. Materials: Natural dried bulrush and galvanized iron. The chair’s concept is rooted in the notion that every spiral starts around a hand. The hole, the imprint of the creator’s hand, is here highlighted by the organically shaped metal back, pointing out where the chair begins. The rhythm of the metal elements of the chair is set by the stitches from the technique. The technique is seen through a new lens, raw and exposed, bringing it closer to its identity as a plant. The Collection zooms in the Bunho technique - a unique portuguese basketry technique that shapes the natural fiber Bulrush (Schoenoplectrus Palla), into a intricate mesh of knots and stitches. Candeeiro Pendant Lamp by Macheia Handmade In Portugal. Dimensions: Ø 80 x H 90 cm. Materials: Natural dried bulrush and galvanized iron. Candeeiro represents a play of concepts - to shed a light, literally, to the Bunho technique. Unconventionally displayed in the ceiling, the wheel is supported by minimal metal structures that hold the electrical mechanism. The reflecting disc, similar in shape to other elements of the collection, solidifies the metal as a complementing material to bulrush. The Collection zooms in the Bunho technique - a unique portuguese basketry technique that shapes the natural fiber Bulrush (Schoenoplectrus Palla), into a intricate mesh of knots and stitches.
