About the Item

Two 1990s yellow Mezzadro stools designed in 1957 by Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Zanotta. Offered individually, and identified from left to right in photos as ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, and ‘D’, with ‘A’ and "D" are no longer available. Commonly referred to as the “Tractor” stool due to its iconic traditional tractor seat, which in this case is of aluminum finished in vibrant yellow lacquer. Cantilevered seat mounted via large wing nut to a curved, chrome-plated, flat bar steel base with solid beech crossbar that doubles as a footrest. “Mezzadro”, “Design: A. Castiglioni”, and Zanotta logo stamped in underside of base. Zanotta label on underside of seat. The Mezzadro stool’s industrially-manufactured seat and evocative name—which means “sharecropper” in Italian—were a nod both to Italy’s mid-century mass production capabilities and its proud traditional agricultural practices. It was considered by Castiglioni to be part of his “Ready-made Objects” collection of designs, with its seat and support bar having originally been taken directly from a tractor designed in the first years of the 20th century. As noted in an essay by a curator for the Museum of Modern Art: "Ready-made Objects evolve like living things: The components of the Mezzadro stool have been updated as the manufacturer of tractor seats has changed without damaging the purity of the object.” NOTE: After being photographed for the listing, stool ‘C’ had its wood foot swapped with that of stool ‘A’, which is in much better condition.
